Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon

CAN-STOP, in collaboration with Rotary District 3234 conducted its 15th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon “One Walk, One Hope” on 27th October 2024, at Island Ground, on the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With multiple sponsors like Indian Express and Sundaram Medical Foundation, it was a successful event with participation from not only the sponsors, but also from various Rotary Clubs and Interact Clubs from schools and colleges all over Tamil Nadu.

The event started at 6am, with stretching and a Zumba session, to warm up for the 2.5km walkathon. Next, the inauguration ceremony included addresses by various dignitaries and Rotarians, including special invitee Padmashri Ms.Joshna Chinappa, an International Squash Player, and Rtn. Dr Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan, Founder of CANSTOP and Trustee and Director of SMF. They emphasised early detection of breast cancer and brought to light the symptoms which can help in the same. They also noted the need for regular breast examinations for women, and the necessity to be compassionate towards our loved ones specifically women, who are more susceptible to breast cancer.

The dignitaries then released pink and lavender balloons into the sky, signifying the kick-off of the Walk. The participants wore shades of pink, and were given sign-boards consisting of information regarding breast cancer to hold as they walked. Led by Traditional Indian Instruments, the roads were soon filled with people walking with unity to make a difference for a single cause. At the end of the Walkathon, participants were given refreshments, and booths as a face painting, medical examination, and lucky draw were available. The event ended with a sense of fulfilment among participants and organisers who lived by the saying “you have to make a noise to be heard”, in bringing awareness to a vital cause such as breast cancer.
