The students of Std XII (2023-24) of the Psychology stream, embarked on a two-week summer internship at TT Ranganathan Research Centre, Chennai. The centre specialises in holistic recovery for the people and their families affected by addiction. The counselling process had various steps in which the students witnessed regular classes for patients on various topics such as grief, family damages, letting go, classes for family members, group therapy as well as specialised sessions for the students by the counsellors. By the end of the internship, the students observed various therapeutic approaches such as music therapy, animal assisted therapy, horticulture therapy and were well informed of the various approaches, steps and angles to consider for helping families suffering from addiction with recovery. The key learning outcomes include the understanding that alcohol and substance abuse is an issue that affects not only the patient but also their family members vastly and they too may require psychological help, an insight into various therapeutic approaches, self-awareness and the ability to conduct oneself appropriately in a professional setting and to cultivate empathy and listening skills.
